BACKGROUND

Michael was born in 1969 and started drawing and painting at the age of four, beginning a lifelong passion for art. As a young boy he spent hours creating detailed pictures of his toys, and in grammar school completed sophisticated art projects that looked like the work of much older students.

He continued his art studies throughout his youth, showing a zeal and talent that earned him various accolades, including the Outstanding Art Student Award and Scholarship at Andrew High School. He earned an associate's degree from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he also completed postgraduate studies in life drawing and oil painting. He continued his studies at Art Students League in New York and at the Palette & Chisel Academy in Chicago where he has been an artist member since 1999, board member since 2004 and faculty member teaching figure painting from life and still life painting.

Van Zeyl's work has been exhibited in various Illinois and national shows and galleries, and he has received multiple commissions, honors, and awards, including; Portrait Society of America, Portrait Society of Atlanta and American Artist Magazine.
